Start a list of pros and cons:

Put it on paper and map out the pros on one side and the cons on the other, this will help you see what you are happy with and what you need to change. This will give you a better view of what is happening in your job now. Its difficult to make decisions when you don’t have clear information, it’s much clearer when mapped out in front of you.

Make a list of your Interests and passions in life:

Yes a list of passions in life, you are not just someone who works but also someone who lives in the outside world.  So make a list of things you love to do in work and outside work.  You could find there is a way to bring some of that list into your new career move. It could be things you like to do as a volunteer or with the family or just having fun.  This could also be used as an opportunity for you to look at your own interests.

Go through your lists:

You may find from going through your list it’s not a career change but a job or team change you need there maybe a block or dealing with a colleague issue that’s resulting in your not being happy. It’s important to distinguish the difference between needing a career change or needing to change jobs, your company might be able to change you to another team if not then a new job might be the next step.

Mind Map / Brainstorm your dream career:

We all have a dream career no matter what stage in life we are. Consider what yours is. Even if the dream career is not immediately in sight why not look for aspects of the career to work towards. Use your list of pros and cons to start. For example, if you’re doing a lot of hands-on work and are looking for something different like Project Management you have cross relatable hands on experience GREAT next step how to get training to get you to the next step.
You can do this, believe in yourself!

Finances:

While it’s ok to dream about your career, you need to pay the bills. You might want to go back to study but your finances may not allow it. In many cases, changing careers comes with a temporary pay change. Go through your finances, make a plan, and make an excel sheet of incoming and outgoing. See what you can do around your finances to allow you to get going.

There are always more than one way to get to your objectives and goals.. In my experience I had to go back to education at night. This took hard work but I could work during the day pay the bills but continue to progress in my career. Find a way, don’t give up that’s the most important thing

Career Research and Choose One:

Once you have decided on a few career options do your research. There’s great information online, try to find someone in that career who can give you insight into the job. Research facts around the industry and role: Are there many roles available? Is the sector growing? Is the sector going in a direction I can also Travel?
Know your strengths and abilities then choose a career and go for it.

Evaluate your skills and Education requirements:

There are countless skills you have learned already! Now which skills do you need to add to this list to get this career going….
Look at the education requirements for this career and what you have got to do to get the show on the road. Start your research….where can you start, look up online there is lots of helpful course information.

Shadow / Internship:

Yes work experience…make sure you know what you are working hard towards so shadow the role. While you may be looking for a career change at 30,40,50,60 looking to shadow someone and bringing yourself into that industry getting in the door, Seeing the job close up. A day will help you decide if you like this job.

While your job shadowing, take time to talk about the requirements for the job, ask which part of the job they like or hate? This is a chance for you to have a clear view.

Make a plan of action:

Now you have decided

  •  are you staying in your job?
  •  are you staying in your career but moving jobs?
  •  are you moving career?
  •  are you upskilling in view of the future?

Write down an action plan.

Do your research.

At this stage you will have decided which direction you are going in so map out the steps needed to get there.

“Sometimes the one thing you need for growth is the one thing you are afraid to do.”
― Shannon L. Alder
